24. Fingersmith - Sarah Waters

Silmänkääntäjä (fingersmith) on henkilö, joka saa muut ihmiset uskomaan tarinaansa tai tekoihinsa niin, että nämä eivät ymmärrä edes epäillä tulleensa huijatuiksi. Watersin romaanissa huijataan tällä tavoin niin päähenkilöitä kuin lukijaakin. Kirja sijoittuu 1800-luvun Englantiin ja Watersia ei olekaan turhaan kuvailtu nykykirjailijoiden Dickensiksi.

Romaanin juoni on niin moniulotteinen, yllättävä ja vaiheikas, että sen kuvailu on lähestulkoon mahdotonta. Lisäksi on parempi, mitä vähemmän kirjan juonesta on kuullut etukäteen, joten en senkään vuoksi tahdo tässä paljastaa liikaa. Pidän suuresti elokuvista, joissa jossakin vaiheessa katsojalle paljastetaan, että mikään ei ollutkaan sitä, miltä näytti. Kirjallisuudessa tällainen lukijaan kohdistuva silmänkääntötemppu on vielä tehokkaampi ja vaikuttavampi. Kirjan tapahtumat ovat paikoin hyvinkin rankkoja ja ahdistavia, joten tämä ei ollut mikään kevyt lukukokemus. Waters pitää kuitenkin lukijan mielenkiinnon yllä ujuttamalla teokseen ahdistavien teemojen lisäksi sopivissa määrin romantiikkaa ja jopa aavistuksenomaista huumoriakin. Yleisesti ottaen tunnelma säilyi hyvin vahvana läpi kirjan ja tuntuukin uskomattomalta, että kirjailija ei ole itse elänyt 1800-luvulla. Taustatyö on tehty ilmeisen hyvin ja jopa kieli tuntuu sopivan vanhahtavalta.

Luin kirjan englanniksi ja näin jälkeenpäin ajateltuna se oli ainoa oikea ratkaisu. En pysty kuvittelemaan, millainen lukukokemus olisi ollut, mikäli olisin lukenut suomennetun version, kielellä oli teoksen tunnelmassa niin suuri merkitys. Kirjan jokaisella henkilöllä on ominainen puhetapa, josta on heti nähtävissä, mihin yhteiskuntaluokkaan henkilö kuuluu. Suosittelisinkin lukemaan teoksen alkuperäiskielellä, mikäli mahdollista.

Omistamani kirjan takakansiesittelyssä on pätkä Guardian-lehden toimittajan arvostelusta, jossa hän sanoo kadehtivansa niitä, jotka eivät ole kirjaa vielä lukeneet, ja joilla on siis edessä vielä tämä mahtava lukukokemus. On myönettävä, että olen itse samoilla linjoilla, harvemmin kirja pitää näin hyvin otteessaan ja on suorastaan elämys!

Arvostelujärjestelmä

Blogin perustamisen jälkeen iski nyt se ongelma, että en malttaisi tehdä mitään muuta kuin lukea, jotta pääsisin kirjoittamaan ensimmäistä varsinaista merkintääni! Nyt kesken oleva kirja onkin erittäin kiinnostava, siitä lisää mahdollisesti jo viikonloppuna.


Tänään tulin ajatelleeksi, että olisi mukavaa kirjallisen selostuksen lisäksi saada jokin kirjoituksia yhtenäistävä tekijä, eräänlainen lopputulema. Päädyin perinteiseen pisteytykseen eli siihen, että annan kirjalle yhdestä viiteen tähteä. Tämä tulee varmasti olemaan vaikeaa ja kenties liian yleistävää, mutta siitä huolimatta aion näin tehdä. Tähdet tarkoittavat siis jotakuinkin seuraavaa:

Rakkaus kirjoihin ja listoihin

Tässä on selitys siihen, mistä blogini kertoo. Pari vuotta sitten sain tämän kirjan syntymäpäivälahjaksi ja siitä lähtien intohimonani on ollut tuon kirjan selailu ja kaukainen, mutta silti melko vahva haave siitä, että jonakin päivänä voisin todeta lukeneeni kaikki nuo kirjat.

Lähipiiristä kuulen välillä hieman sarkastisia kommentteja siitä, miten siinä vaiheessa, kun (kenties eläkeläisenä) olen kahlannut nämä 1001 kirjaa läpi, on jo kirjoitettu muutama sata yleissivistykseen kuuluuvaa kirjaa enemmän. Tiedostan, että tämä lista ei ole mikään absoluuttinen totuus, vaan se edustaa toimittajansa mielipidettä tiettynä aikana (kirja on julkaistu vuonna 2006 ja siitä on tehty jo päivitettyjä painoksia, joihin en aio kuitenkaan tutustua ennen kuin nämä 1001 on luettu).

Siitä voin olla varma, että noihin tuhanteen ja yhteen kirjaan lukeutuu joukko maailmankirjallisuuden kauneimpia ja ikimuistoisimpia helmiä, joihin en välttämättä muuten jaksaisi tutustua. Kirja toimiikin kannustimena ja lukuvinkkilistana ja siinä ohella saan toteuttaa itselleni mieluista harrastusta, laatia listan ja yliviivata siltä asioita! Lyhyesti siis: tässä blogissa yhdistyvät rakkauteni kirjoja ja listoja kohtaan.

Kun sain kirjan käsiini, olin lukenut noin parikymmentä teosta, nyt luettuja kirjoja on jo 50. Aion blogissani keskittyä tuoreimpiin lukemiini kirjoihin, mutta saatan palata kirjoittamaan jo näistä aiemmin luetuista teoksista.
